GMRS users operate with a variety of two-way radios.

1.  Hand-held radios (commonly called HTs with the attendant limited output power).

2.  Vehicle-mounted radios (often incorporating "gain" or signal-multiplying antennae) or

3.  Base units with elevated, larger and more effective antennae.

Although Oly-Comm makes no specific recommendations, regarding makes and models, we can share information we have observed regarding units with features and reputation that may prove helpful to the new user.  As with any purchase of new equipment we recommend you take the time to thoroughly investigate all the features, purchase the best you budget will allow and then spend time learning to develop you operating skills.  If you can regularly spend time with other experienced users that would be a plus!

Some users prefer to operate with new or used, highly-reliable commercial radio communications equipment like Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, etc. Upon thorough investigation one can also safely make purchases of this nature. One such source is Used-radios.com

The question often arises "is this radio legal to use on GMRS?"  Some efforts, to publish a listing of radios that qualify as "legal" (read "certified" as required by various Rules Parts), have been attempted by others in the past.  We will, to the best of our ability, publish our ongoing work here.

As this page develops we will provide links to various retailers or sources of hardware that have an established user-base for your consideration.  We have NO affiliate relationship with any of these sales organizations.
